You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. i want to thank everyone who sends me e-mail or blogs about camp creek and says such nice things about this blog and — ahem — about me. i really, really appreciate it! thank you!

these summer open threads are hard. i imagine you all have better things to do than hunch over the keyboard on a beautiful summer weekend. but … there’s always the australians. it’s winter there. ;^) and it is supposed to rain tomorrow!

we’ll be spending the weekend outdoors as much as possible, gardening, cooking out, playing ping-pong, swimming, and i have a whole plan to replace the canvas on my vintage deck chair. wish me luck! and have a wonderful weekend. :^)

Happy Fourth! We will be going to an old fashioned fourth of July party on the fifth, where my kids will be dressed in 1800 country kid garb and play in a fife and drum parade! And hopefully it will NOT rain.

We're mixing up our weekend and spending part of it with old friends and the rest still unpacking. While the summer might be hard to be inside, I for one am glad to have this here it's one of my weekly stimulation, especially being in a new home having this routine is welcome.

This weekend is going to be a crazy mix of family, friends and fireworks (with a little gardening thrown in for me if I'm lucky:)!
I'm curious, Lori, is your ping pong table outside? That sounds like a lot of fun. As for checking in to your blog over the summer, I'm here quite a bit. Since I'm trying to revamp what homeschool looks like in our home, I read and re-read your posts frequently. Thanks for all you share and good luck on your chair project.

it’s pouring rain here — luckily i prepared. i’ll be working on the chair today, looking ahead to sitting on it at the beach soon. ;^)

kelly, we sometimes drag it outside and play — that *is* so fun! — but right now it’s in the greenhouse. kind of a porch-y feel in there. :^)

i will need the luck on the chair project. i am scratching my head over replicating the seat and wondering if the original makers sewed it in midair or somehow took the chair apart.

Happy 4th! We're trying to get some things done--clean out the garage (in preparation for getting everything out of the basement so it can be finished at the end of the summer, hopefully, if we can believe the guy who's going to do it; I fear it will stretch farther into fall than I want), clean the gutters, and I guess that's it but it seems like a lot with three kids hanging around. I am of no help whatsoever, since I'm the baby minder. I hope later today I can do some more sewing, something I can't do unless there's another baby minder around. We're going visiting tomorrow, but today we're staying home. We live ten minutes from the closest beach and any direction we go in we're bound to hit tourist traffic. No way in heck would I go to the beach on July 4th. ;) I kind of like our holed-up holiday and would be fine staying home tomorrow, too. (We're visiting in-laws...)

i'm back to my computer in the corner after a very fun weekend! a little beach, some shopping and cleaning up around the neglected yard. how did the chair project go? any pictures??

Although not American, we do have a local air base where US soldiers are stationed. On the 4th there was a big party held for the soldiers, their families and local people. It was great fun, and a good introduction for my Brit kids into why 4th July is a significant date. I feel a project in the offing........

What a great quote! We spent the day and evening with family... most notably a BIL who spent $1000 on fireworks. My kids played with their cousins, we had fabulous BBQ, and I missed the show because my baby and a niece were scared out of their wits by the noise. But I did get to watch a princess movie with a darling 2 year old, and know that my husband and other children were having the time of their lives.

I don't comment very often, but I love your blog and how inspired I am by it to be the best homeschooling mama I can be.

jill and nancy — if i ever finish the chair project (and i have to — i want to sit on it on the beach this summer!) i will share photos! ;^) at least the fabric is washed and ironed and i’m working on the pattern…
