Taking our art materials outside.

Drawing and painting in nature.

Appreciating some of the beautiful places in our community: parks, gardens, arboretum.

How could you resist?

Well, here's how (to do a resist!): Draw with oil pastels, then do a watercolor wash. The area drawn with the pastels (oil! not chalk!) “resists” the watercolor. Crayons also work to do a resist, but the oil pastels have more vibrant color and depth.

Now get out there!

How beautiful! We're definitely going to try the resist technique while we're at the beach. Oh, and we finally had an observational drawing breakthrough with the small perfectionist when we were out for sushi last night. She drew the grass centerpiece. Yay!

Thank you for reminding me that sometimes it is good to take our art outdoors... Hope and I will be doing that that this week when it cools off :)

Oh yeah! I had to include you in my latest post because girl, this is where I come when they say "I"m bored". And you know what? We came here yesterday and found something to do today! Thanks for being my life-saver on those days!

Yes ma'am!

I just started playing with watercolors myself AND I found my old box of pastels in the attic. I think it's time to bring son in on the fun.

Oooooh, I like your blog! Just found you by way of Molly Irwin, and I'll be back. I don't homeschool, but I have two eight-year-old boys and I wish there was more gentleness, art, and joy in their school. Your journey is inspiring. Thank you for sharing.

If we were doing that here, we'd be fried eggs on the patio. Poor us.

However, G did such a great observational drawing of the driftwood on the beach a few weeks ago. I'll have to scan and brag.

Wishing we were somewhere less hot.
