moving and reorganizing

Anyone else in the throes of intense spring cleaning?

We are doing an enormous space switch that involves me moving my office, my 11-year-old moving up to the loft to his very own bedroom where my office used to be, and my 8-year-old spreading out in his former shared space to get his own room and the whole desk to himself. (The latter of which is requiring a lot of Ikea construction.)

Remember those cheap plastic games where you would move the little tiles up, down, sideways trying to get them in numerical order? That's what I feel like right now. Except the little plastic tiles are heavy pieces of furniture, boxes of books, endless bins of LEGOs, and all my craft supplies.

We are all experiencing some intense emotions about this shift as well.

I am feeling just a tiny bit sad about losing my office under the eaves, especially since I had a tiny balcony with a view.

Younger son is feeling just a tiny bit sad about not sharing a room with his big brother anymore.

Older son is experiencing joy and exultation on getting his own space.

So, not only are there clouds of dust in the air, the arguments over what should stay and what should be donated, the constant background hum of vacuuming, but also a heightened emotional state. Sigh.

I know a couple people are likewise occupied. Anyone else have a big spring project under way?

I came home a few days ago to a sparkling clean storage closet. When we downsized last year, we moved from a huge 100 year old home with 5 bedrooms, extra schoolroom, full attic and full basement and detached 2 car garage with attic above it as well.

We moved into a delightful 3 bedroom townhouse with no basement, no attic, no garage, and 1 storage closet. We got rid of SO MUCH. But we still had so much when we moved.

Whatever we couldn't fit gracefully into the bedrooms went into the storage closet, and stayed there untouched by human hands until last week, when my sweet man undertook the herculean labor of cleaning it out and reorganizing the shelves.

So I am not exactly in the throes, but I owe him, bigtime!

I am currently thinking about how to reduce the clutter in my kitchen / dining room / library / laundry room. I've been pouring over you photos of how you organize stuff over there, and I must say you are way to hip for me. *grin*

Maybe you could give me some tips. I'll send you some photos.

yes and yes.

cleaning, clearing, I cannot believe how many winter coats, hats, boots, etc. that we own. It's shameful really - and now it's all in the storage closet after a pretty busy weekend. In-laws are coming this weekend and they are a "ne'r-a-pin-out-of-place" type of couple. Much to do ... much... much, very much.

Hi there. I've been visiting your blog for a while and I love all of the ideas for teaching my children about art. My big spring project is finally starting my own blog! We just finished making a new space for my own art and I can't wait to get started. Thanks for all of your great ideas.

lol, megan - send me pics if you want - but beware! i only show off the organized part. ;^)

there is plenty that is not at *all* gracefully fit into *our* bedrooms!

oh my, molly. well, in a way i wish i had some everything-in-its-place in-laws coming over this weekend, because that would be quite a powerful motivator! :^D okay, maybe not. ;^)

sam, yours sounds like a *fun* project. :^) you only have to organize your thoughts! having your own space is the best - congratulations! (send pics!) and thank YOU very much. :^)

oh lori. sounds an awful lot like our home right now. except the hum of the vacuum. ours broke and i am not willing to vacuum the floors with the hose and attachments on hands and knees! i will borrow a vacuum soon and hopefully all will be well. we are seriously in the middle of all sorts of shifting and switching. my 'space' is becoming a guest room for a summer visitor.....where will it all go!?! perfect illustration, those littles puzzles. i am totally feeling it right there with ya.

Hi Lori :) Your post made me laugh, though I am so sorry for the stress you are feeling. We are in the middle of preparing for a new baby in June - yikes! That is so soon! Just today, we have moved our two-year old sweetie boy into his first big boy bed, and our six-year old sweetie girl into a new loft. BIG day! There were lots of wiggles and giggles and tears, too. Blessings! Q

you seem always to have just completed what I am thinking about. As a mother of girls I must must sort out the wardrobe situation. Every inch of our house is used everyday and everything must have a place or it does not work - it can be very wearing always keeping this up but space in the city is gold!!!

So this weekend we have a May Day holiday and on Thursday a vote for Mayor which means school becomes a voting station and we get to go to the zoo or maybe do some sorting.

I am in the mood to do some sifting and sorting and recylcing to friends of clothes and toys.

Love the blog as always and I know your boys will love thier own space Alice has a lovely desk all to herself - www.vitsoe.com check it out a real design classic ! I think you will like it must take a pic to show Jack

Oh gosh. I hear you! Once we finally settle on a new place to move, we're then launching into moving-mode, so we've been purging our house of junk (mostly mine) in readiness. It's an emotional thing. I feel a bit scared by it, I must admit!

I'm currently working on refinsishing our picnic table and benches and repainting the front door a second time after buying the wrong color and not realizing until I started painting!! Maybe, if we're really motivated we might touch up the porch railings and columns. Not looking forward to that, but it's needed!

Yes! We have just put our house on the market, which meant changing a playroom into an office and garage, well, into a place to put a car instead of a storage space. It is pretty traumatic. I can completely sympathize.

Glad I'm not the only going through Spring cleaning. Our house is on the market and we have to keep it clean and presentable. I tend to be clean and organized, but being made to do it takes the fun out of it. I really don't know how much more we can get ride of. We've hauled so much already. We are not really a "stuff" family either. What you said about the numerical order game is right on the money. We've tried things 10 different mainly in the garage. There just come a point when it's enough.

Happy Cleaning!

I've done a lot of changing and shifting as well lately. When things are changing in my head (and our lives) the house has to change to. It's a lot of work, doing that every time, but afterwards I feel very releved when everything is sorted out and well suited to our 'new' life. Proud too, if I managed to empty one closet (and got rid of that stuff, as you can read in my post from 17 april on my blogspot-blog) (I'm now testing a typepad account to see if that works better...)
I hope emotions will calm down and you all be able to enjoy these changes!

love all your responses - it is oddly very comforting to imagine others sweating and grunting in their own homes. i will e-mail you all individually tonight! :^*

I'm working up the energy to excavate Annika's room and then move the two of them into a shared bedroom and make her room a shared play/study room. Neither of them likes to sleep alone, so until Gunnar demands privacy, they can bunk together. Maybe you can send me some of your organizing fervor my way?

oh yes...house projects. As we looked at "bedroom configurations" for the new house, for about five minutes I entertained the idea separating Mary and Emma into their own rooms. And then my heart broke and I never thought about it again.
Keep building those IKEA units and following along with the chubby elf on the directions. And think of me--not as the chubby elf, of course, but also huffing and puffing and chugging along at my house projects! :)

sarah, please - you are the finishing queen - i wish i had your stick-to-it-iveness! i like kids sharing :^) unfortunately d is at that age where he is ready for his own space. sigh.

oh, ok, i'll send you a bit. ;^)

oh, molly, i know just what you are saying. i shared a room with my sister until i went to college, and i remember very clearly the good *and* bad things about it. ;^)

omg, the elf. the elf who tells you through mime not to build your cabinets outdoors or while on fire .. thanks, helpful elf! and what the heck are you saying now? we can't decipher it.

i'm loving watching your house come along! keep the pictures coming!

Hi Lori, yes here we are still renovating and slowly, slowly it goes on. I can imagine how much work (and emotion) are coming to you with those moves. Hope your new office will be as charming as the old one. Spring is the best season for such changes I think, cause you're in an energetic mood and open for the new, that comes.
May 2, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterkarin
hi karin! :^)

yes, the emotion is harder to take than the work. it is always fun to organize and decorate. (not so much fun to clean.) my office in the greenhouse is the same - but i can only use it during spring/summer/fall. too cold in the winter! now in the winter i will work down in the nook by the kitchen. at least it's warm there. and all the food is there. ;^)

you are absolutely right - spring is the season for changes!

"it is oddly very comforting to imagine others sweating and grunting in their own homes."

yikes! I don't find dwelling on that image all that comforting, to be honest...

Oh yes, lots of that going on here too! There's just something about being able to throw the curtains back and open the windows up and clean things out. I just re-organized our school room and included a new nature table. I hope to be able to post about it soon.

Blessings for your spring!
