This is not an excuse. Well, yes it is. It snowed and snowed and snowed yesterday, and then our country internet went out. So — art lesson coming soon!

In the meantime, take a look at some of our observational draw-ers! From our friends following along from home:

And from our class:

Lily, observational drawing by Jack, age 8

Note: Jack has been drawing for a long time! (I was really impressed by this drawing.) Most of my students have just begun. This is where we're all headed!

Those drawings are great and so different from each other. I love the buffalo :)

you're right — this collection of drawings really demonstrates the vast possibilities of observational drawing!

and gracie was drawing from a real (stuffed) buffalo, not a drawing — if only i could bring one of those to class!

jeesh ... Jack, you're really super good! They are all good. The thing is this, really: repetition; practice ... "Nulla Dies sine linea" and you're so right, Lori -- that's where they can and will go.

This is really opening my eyes to the unrealized potential in a typical public or private school art class once a week, with "canned" projects such as "copy the style of Mondrian."

We are joining you all .. sooner than summer as I had planned.

thank you, molly - and i agree with you, of course.

i think children take the larger lesson away as well - that we can be better at anything if we spend time doing it - that we can see ourselves improve and know it happened because of work.

it seems to me that when i was a child, children were given time to develop their talents. now, if you're not immediately excellent at something, you move on. but there's so much enjoyment to be had from slowly gaining a skill, growing and improving with time.
