clean sweep

Is spring cleaning still a thing?

I clean in the winter. Mostly because in the spring (and summer) (and fall), I have better things to do than clean. Also because in the winter I'm trapped inside with what needs to be cleaned. And organized. And dispatched.

I donated eight bags of clothing yesterday. Am I the only one who can't keep up with how fast the kids outgrow their things? Any attempts to keep hand-me-downs from the older one seem to fail miserably. For one thing, the younger one (three years younger!) often laps his brother, managing to be a half-size larger than his brother was the year before. If something would actually fit, then it manages to disappear until just outgrown.

I have no "resolves" as the boys call them, but I am determined not to buy new bins. Every urge to clean and organize seems to come hand-in-hand with a desire for new bins.

The bins and bags of saved t-shirts that were meant to be turned into t-shirt quilts are being cut into quilt squares and rags, which will create a whole new space in my closet. Halfway through this project, I realized that I should be making this quilt for myself, as I am the one who is nostalgic and weepy over these bits of stained cotton, and the boys are merely embarrassed.

It is very satisfying to cut the piles of shirts into usable scraps and discard the "bones". While sifting and sorting, Jack became inspired to make a gift for a new baby friend. A design was sketched, and fabrics chosen. This is one reason why all my sewing projects move forward so slowly. I can't touch the machine without a child materializing with a fistful of material and a big plan.

But I'm not complaining.

You are way ahead of me at getting into the new year. I'm still (having returned home 3 days ago) basking in the slow atmosphere of taking down strands of lights and glass balls.

I have a yard of the same red, blue, green polka dot. Tiny circles are a weekness for me. Looking forward to seeing the t-shirt quilt progress.

I can totally relate. Once Avery hears the sewing machine, she brings out her own stash and ideas. We often end up doing a little rotating dance between the sewing machine and the ironing board. I currently have several boxes bound for donation sitting by the front door. It feels so good to purge, especially after so many new items come into the home around the holidays. Happy cleaning!

hello, my mollys! :^) (well, not *all* of my mollys...)

don't think i'm way ahead. my tree is still up, there are plastic bins sitting suggestively *next* to the tree, but that's it. still, i was so late getting the tree up this year, it's fresh as a daisy!

i love that retro-looking red/blue/green dot fabric. jack, however, has taken it. oh well.

if you are looking forward to seeing progress, well, this might not be your blog! haha

molly, your avery has the most liquidy eyes and gorgeous hair .. i will sew with her any time. ;^)

sometimes, however, i wish my machine had a "silent" setting so i could just *finish something*. lol. i wish this in the same way that i dream for a hidden bathroom (behind a bookcase, perhaps?) that only i know about...

it DOES feel so good to purge. sometimes i have a hard time letting go of things. i stash them in a special bag and then a week or so later, try to remember what's in it .. i usually can't, so off it goes!

i guess this is the wrong thing to say as we are all feeling so good about purging, but i guess january would be a great month to go thrifting...

I was sewing like a madwoman before Christmas when one evening my neice called, and as we were talking she said, "Is that the sewing machine?" Yes, I was attempting to sew and talk on the phone at the same time. Silent sewing machine would be excellent, much like a silent computer, and a hidden bathroom - that cleaned itself.

!. I'm totally hitting all the Goodwills and Sal's in a 50 mile radius tomorrow, because you are right, this must be the best month ever for thrifting!

2. I so hear you on the new bins. It seems I but them every January, but they somehow disappear or lose lids or... what?... between organizing sessions.

3. Oh yes, I can neither cook nor sew without a boy shoeing up with his own set of ideas. It definitely sends efficiency, or the hope of actually completing my own project out the window, but it's kind of great anyhow, this band of crafty chefs that shadow me.

4. Lot's of love to you, friend. Lots.

molly, if the bathroom was hidden, it would barely NEED to be cleaned by comparison, if you know what i'm saying. lol

stef, i bet you get some *awesome* stuff. and YES, we definitely lose lids. it's like tupperware, but so much larger. if i find lids, they don't fit the bins i have. it's a mystery.

i think there is a warm, loving something in there that every time they see us starting to cook or sew or read or watch tv, they think there is an implicit invitation to join us. ;^)

lots of love back to you, friend - xoxo
