Favorite film #3: Before Sunrise/Before Sunset

before-sunrise.jpg"Before Sunrise" came out in 1995.

Written and directed by Richard Linklater, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.

This film encompasses so much of what life is like when you are in your early 20s. I love this movie and was lucky enough to share it with two 20-something friends before its sequel, "Before Sunset", came out.

(This is such a great follow-up to "A Little Romance"! My favorite 13-year-old romance followed by my favorite 23-year-old romance...)

Ten years after making the first movie, the three principals got together to write and make the sequel. The beauty in the second movie is in how much truth they managed to write into their film. Both movies are long conversations, playing out against a beautiful background.

If you haven't seen these movies, I recommend watching the first one and letting it marinate for a few days before watching the second. The last scene of the first movie plays out so beautifully. It's worth thinking about that movie for awhile before watching the sequel.

"You couldn't possibly know why a night like this is so important to my life right now, but it is."

Loved both of these movies. Just saw Conversations With Other Women, which reminded me of both movies rolled into one - the before and after, less interesting conversation though.

have you seen julie delpy's new movie 2 days in paris? it's on my netflix list.

both "a little romance" and "before sunrise" remind me so much of those particular times in my life .. i think that's why i love them so much. they're evocative in and of themselves, but they are also so evocative of my early teen years, my 20s...

i will put CWOW on my netflix list .. but the conversations do really make these movies, don't they? they're so real. xo

Not a big Ethan Hawke fan, but I LOVED both these movies, the second one slightly more even, which I thought would be impossible.

Also loved Station Agent, have never seen "Little Romance". Have to ask if you've seen "Truly Madly Deeply"? In a different vein these, except that it too is a small, beautiful movie---strangly light-hearted and deeply sad at the same time.

I absolutely LOVED this movie. The conversation was incredible. Oh, the talent!! I want to go watch it again right now. Knowing that you loved this movie makes me certain that I will love the first two about which you blogged.

deirdre, i *love* truly madly deeply. it's another movie i introduce friends to because they usually haven't seen it. (and that movie is why i love alan rickman.)

jill, i hope they work for you ;^) but i can't imagine you not liking "the station agent" - definitely give it a try!

I've slowly caught on to the fact that you reply in your comment *duh*... I've loved Alan Rickman since then too. Should have known any "YatH" fan would already know the good ones out there:-)

Have you seen "Juno" yet? Looking forward to your next Beautiful Film.

ha, sorry deirdre! i like receiving responses in e-mail to my comments, but i always think it looks weird when someone asks a question in the comments and it just hangs there .. and you wonder if the blogger was so *rude* to never answer, lol. so i'm an on-scene comment responder. now if you never come back, you never know, but i've done my best.

jenifer, you *must* see before sunrise!

rjr, give me a break; how can you not love these movies? there is a stone where your heart should be. and i learned how to stretch a recipe from my mom -- thinner .. thinner .. MAKE THEM THINNER.
