coasting into the holiday break

beinganelf.jpg

At the tiny private school, we harbored mixed feelings about the holidays. Not so much the big ones, but the little ones — Valentines Day, St. Patrick's Day, etc. Pulaski Day, anyone? Anyone? Those holidays have a tendency to derail what is going on in the classroom, and when you are doing project work, you hate to mess with the rhythm and flow.

At the TPS, we touched on the holidays lightly and tried to keep things on track. At home, forget about it. You'd think that here in my isolation I could keep things on the straight and narrow, but you would be wrong.

We are in full ramping-up-to-the-holiday mode here. There is no downplaying Christmas. The boys are ecstatic because after this week, they get to be "off" for their winter break. (Off? Off from what, exactly? Do they know how good they have it? Oh, I am officially old.)

Projects have been mostly tossed aside. Or thrown with great force. (Although Jack did create an action figure for his "Mom Lady and Son Boy" comic book. I want to show it to you soooo much, but I am not allowed to reveal "the prototype".) There is ornament making. There is reading in front of the fire. There is some card and letter writing. And there is begging to make cookies. Sigh. I am ready to call it quits early and just throw on a red apron and bake my way to Christmas Eve.

No! I shall persevere. Besides, I need to keep them busy with their math so I can get some presents wrapped. At least for a few more days!

That is so funny "Off from what?" We had been starting an advent study and I thought it was fun (wrong again) the kids almost yawned themselves to death. We scrapped it and have been making marshmallow people, cards, ornaments, reading books and singing carols ever since last week. Our kids to have asked "When are we on Christmas holidays??" Um, looks like now!

Yes, their normal day is so hard -- the art, the reading, the building, the playing outside! Thank goodness they'll be able to relax soon and get some well-earned rest. Sheesh.

I'm afraid we're going to be out and about so much this week that it might as well be another week of vacation. I just hope when January rolls around they'll be tired of the endless free play and ready to get down to business. ;^)

okay. so we did a little math today (timed test for 7's) and a little from our learning to tell time book.

then we built tents in the living room and played robin hood and tested the "on at dusk, off at dawn" candlesticks dh bought on a whim (science? and they passed with flying colors - wax on, wax off, wax on, wax off...)and ate brownies before lunch and built with legos and wooden blocks (geometry?)

and later i'm attempting panettone (it says i spelled that wrong - what is the MATTER WITH UNIVERSAL SPELL CHECK?)

so i guess we're already braking. mostly.

endless free play ROCKS.

"why, when i was a girl, we sat in our desk til 3 and had 1 bathroom break and cold gruel for lunch AND WE LIKED IT"

;)

happy happy

The best thing about homeschooling is that every day is like Christmas break, Spring break or summer break - the only difference is the weather. Lessons are all around - and this time of year we get to quadruple cookie recipes (fractions and multiplication), estimate yardage for gift wrap and ribbons, write our wish lists, explore traditions (sounds like history and social studies to me) and even figure out the area of a spherical ornament (advanced geometry).

Love all the legos and quotes :)

lol, molly. *i* agree with you - homeschooling *is* like Christmas break every day! the boys, however, ache for their free days just as much as poor tom sawyer sweating away in his stifling school room. ;^) they just don't know how lucky they've got it!
