holiday shopping — in my pajamas

12.07-stove_books.jpg

Jack has fallen asleep in front of the fire two nights in a row. Last night he lined up all the pillows in a row to make a bed for himself.

We are having an ice storm today, and I am sitting by the fire doing my holiday shopping online. It's sooooooo wonderful to get gifts without having to go to the mall. (Sorry, mall!) My idea of fun holiday shopping is to go once, really early in the season, with my mom and sister, with no pressure to find anything in particular, and have a two-hour lunch.

12.07-first_present.jpgI know many good people are pledging to buy handmade this year, but please. I live with three geeky man-boys. Everything they want from Santa plugs in. And I have inflicted plenty of homemade gifts in my lifetime, most of them to my mom. (Hi, mom!) Afghan, cross-stitched mice decorating a Christmas tree (seriously), eight cross-stitched placemats with matching napkins (seriously!) (never used!) (someday I will get them back and sell them on Ebay!), etc. My sister got the clock I made out of cork and marbles. I'll let your mind chew on that for awhile.

Actually, now that I think about it, I have made a lot of gifts in my day. And I've gifted quite a few things made by others: artwork, pottery, handwoven scarves, things from Ten Thousand Villages.

This year, my money is going to Amazon and Nintendo. If it helps at all, however, I'll be making my own cookies and pies. And I'll be drinking homemade hot chocolate rather than a three-dollar Starbucks mocha latté, and doing my shopping by couch rather than car. I hope that helps offset my Nintendo footprint.

I just love visiting your blog!!!! So inspiring, so fun!!! Remember making stamps like that when I was a kid - you've inspired me to try it with my own.

I recently stumbled upon your blog and find it so useful and entertaining! thanks!

I think we must live in the same area (western suburbs of Chicago) because the nasty ice storm has struck here too- the trees look gorgeous!

we're in central IL -- i think you guys got it worse than we did. my sister said the roads were terrible. i stayed in. ;^)

i need to get one of those giant freezers for the barn so i can just stay home all winter. if we had enough frozen pizza and ice cream, we could go the duration.

thank you again!

you rock sister. i'm doing handmade stuff as well "oooo free shipping? i'll TAKE IT"

cause as you know i'm a slut for approval, and this way all my bases are covered.

10K villages is such an awesome place.

finishing up my Rainbow Resource order now. homeschool curricula disguised as xmas gifts = i am a smart homeschool cookie (the children are not old enough to figure out the breadth of my deception. i'm sure someday i'll pay. or they will. for therapy.)

so, you like xstitch, huh?

sheesh.

hee hee, did i not already mention the homeschool curricula as gifts?! oh yes, sister. santa loves the chemistry set and the microscope, does he not? he's old school.

do i like cross-stitch? well, it's fair to say that i liked it IN THE EIGHTIES. i can't believe the cross-stitch i'm spying around the internets lately. i'm poised and ready to whip out my Ziggy pillows as soon as the time is ripe.

Books and other things from Dover Publishing are my exceptions to the handmade pledge...who could resist more books for our already overflowing shelves and great coloring books? Not me. Oh, and we are finally of age for some real games like Uno and Sorry, so those are on our list too. So, you are in good company. (wink)

well, hello eren. ;^) you *are* good company.

we are game addicts. we love uno and sorry. we've been playing a lot of boggle and othello, too. our all-time fave is settlers (of catan). i managed to get everyone in my extended family addicted, and now we put our sets together and make a huge game board when we get together. :^)

and, of course, i am always ready to spank someone in scrabble if they'll agree to play me. anyone up for a game?
