public vs. private vs. home
I ran a private school for seven years, and I have worked for the last four years as an educational consultant. I speak at conferences and give workshops at schools and work with teachers in the areas of Reggio-inspired curricula and environments, project-based learning, and authentic art.
Whew! That's a mouthful.
I also homeschool.
Some people are surprised, nay they are even slightly put off, that I both work in education and homeschool. I'm like a nudist tailor. A barefoot cobbler. A vegan butcher.
Shouldn't I practice what I preach?
Ah, but I do. Because I don't champion public education, I champion education. Specifically, I champion a specific sort of education, a sort of learning that involves large amounts of art, long-term projects, and child-directed learning. A sort of learning that can be done in a classroom. A sort of learning that can be done in a home.
One of the best, most on-the-money compliments I ever received about my school was, "It's like homeschooling .. with other kids!" And it was. And it was good.

molly, i love that article too. it is one of the few places online you can see actual pictures of a Reggio school. and i agree completely - everything i have learned from studying the Reggio approach guides me in my homeschooling. thank you for your comment!
